My location is not available in Emergency Radio. How can it be added?

A icon

The live frequencies in Emergency Radio are powered mostly by a community of volunteers and enthusiasts who broadcast from scanning equipment connected to their computers. The feeds are not necessarily provided by the police and fire departments. As a result, not all locations are available to us, and some are only online certain times of the day. If there isn't a feed available for your location or it's simply not reliable and you have a police/fire scanner, you can host an audio feed for the RadioReference / Emergency Radio community.

To get started hosting a feed, you'll need a scanner - either analog or digital depending on your location. (You can find this out by searching for your location at RadioReference.) They're available online at ScannerMaster or Amazon.com. Once you get a scanner, you'll connect an audio cable (3.5mm standard headphone jack) from the scanner to the line-in port on your computer (either a PC or Mac will work) and run software in the background to stream the audio to RadioReference servers. You'll also need to set up the scanner to hear nearby frequencies. (A good reference for finding the frequencies in your area is RadioReference.)

To find out more, please go to: http://www.radioreference.com/apps/content/?cid=5

Once a feed is added to the RadioReference directory, it will automatically appear in the next Emergency Radio database update.

Unfortunately, sending us scanner frequencies or requests for locations will not help us add them to Emergency Radio. However, if you are hosting a feed (outside of RadioReference) and would like to give us permission to include it in Emergency Radio, we'd love to hear from you!

Q icon

Is it legal to listen to police, fire, and EMS frequencies with Emergency Radio?

A icon

The feeds provided in Emergency Radio are legal in the United States; however, we recommend that you check with your state, local, and federal laws as radio laws sometimes change.

Some general points of interest:

  • It is illegal own and operate a police scanner if you are a convicted felon.
  • In some states, it is illegal to carry a police scanner in your vehicle and act on that knowledge. We recommend that you not use Emergency Radio while driving.
  • It is illegal to listen to encrypted frequencies such as FBI SWAT and DEA. Emergency Radio does not include any encrypted frequencies.

For more information, we recommend that you check out the Scanner Legality section of this page.

Q icon

Are there plans for a WebOS (Palm Pre) version of Emergency Radio?

A icon

At this time, we're focused on improving the iPhone version of Emergency Radio, but we do plan to support WebOS in the future. Unfortunately, it's too early to provide an estimate of the release date or offer any further details.

If you'd like to be notified as soon as we make any announcements regarding the WebOS version, please follow us on Twitter (@emergencyradio).

Q icon

How do I update to the latest version of Emergency Radio?

A icon

Go to App Store on your iPhone or iPod Touch, and tap on Updates (lower right corner). If the screen displays All Apps Are Up to Date, you have the latest version. If Emergency Radio is listed in the update list, tap on it, then tap the Free button, and then Install to download the update.

In iTunes, click on Applications in your library, and then Check for Updates (lower right corner). You can then download the new update and sync your device.

Q icon

Why can't I hear anything when I'm listening to Emergency Radio?

A icon

Sound issues are rare and usually are the result of a connectivity issue (either a weak WiFi or cellular network connection). To troubleshoot, turn the volume up all of the way (with both the physical volume buttons and by sliding the volume control to the far right on the screen). Then, try one of the busier frequencies (Chicago police, for example). It may take a few minutes to hear something if it's a slow time for the department. If you still can't hear anything please check your connection and try to improve the signal strength.

Q icon

Q icon

When will a BlackBerry version of Emergency Radio become available?

A icon

It's too early to provide an estimate of the release date. As with all EdgeRift software, we will take as much time as needed to ensure the application is as polished as possible.

If you'd like to be included in the beta testing program for Emergency Radio (BlackBerry), please click here for more information.

If you have friends and/or colleagues who use BlackBerry phones and would also be interested in beta testing, feel free to pass along the link above. We are looking for as many different test configurations as possible to ensure that all BlackBerry users have a great experience when using Emergency Radio.

How do I use Safe Deposit Boxes?

A icon

A Safe Deposit Box is a kind of AllSecure item that allows you to securely store up to 2GB worth of compressed files and folders. Files stored in a Safe Deposit Box are ZIP-compressed and AES-256 encrypted.

  • To create a new Safe Deposit Box, click Add button icon directly underneath the List View. You can also drag and drop files into the List View to create a Safe Deposit Box that contains the dragged-in files.
  • To retrieve files stored inside a Safe Deposit Box, double-click on the item displayed in the List View. The Item Inspector window appears.
  • Safe Deposit Boxes have a maximum size of 2GB¹. If you need to store many files, consider splitting them into multiple Safe Deposit Boxes.

Using Item Inspector with Safe Deposit Boxes

The Item Inspector panel allows you to view and edit Safe Deposit Box details. The following illustration explains how to use Item Inspector with Safe Deposit Boxes.

  1. Maximum file storage size depends on the complexity of the directory structure, as additional storage is required for maintaining the directory list.

How do I backup, restore, or transfer my database?

A icon Hard drive failure can strike when you least expect it. We highly recommend that you configure Time Machine (a feature in Mac OS X Leopard), or another application, to perform automatic backups of the AllSecure database. Then, you'll never have to worry about losing any of the data stored in AllSecure.
  • To configure Time Machine, open System Preferences in Mac OS X and look for the Time Machine preference pane. You'll need an extra hard drive connected to your computer, if you don't already have one.
  • To configure another backup application, refer to that application's user manual or help guide. As long as your home folder (along with its subdirectories) is selected for backups, you have nothing to worry about when it comes to backing up AllSecure's database. (If you need to know the precise location of where the AllSecure database is stored, refer to the AllSecure Database Directory below.)
  • To perform a manual backup, simply copy the files from the AllSecure Database Directory to another hard drive, or USB jump drive.

Restoring

  • To restore an AllSecure database, simply copy the backed-up database files (from wherever they are stored) into the AllSecure Database Directory. You will need to create the 'AllSecure' folder if it doesn't exist (the database files must be placed inside of it).
  • To replace an existing AllSecure database with another, delete all files and subfolders stored in the AllSecure Database Directory. Next, copy the replacement database files into the same directory.

Transferring

  • To transfer an existing AllSecure database to another computer, copy the files from the AllSecure Database Directory to a storage device (e.g., hard drive or USB jump drive). Next, connect the storage device to the destination computer. Open the AllSecure Database Directory on the destination computer and delete all files and subfolders that are inside. Finally, copy the replacement database files to the same directory.

AllSecure Database Directory

The AllSecure database files are stored in the following location: /Users/YourNameHere/Library/Application Support/AllSecure

YourNameHere is your Mac OS X username.

Important Note: Before backing up or restoring AllSecure database files, ensure that the AllSecure application is completely closed; otherwise, database file corruption may occur.

Q icon

When using the Safe Deposit Box feature, I get error code 11. How can I resolve this?

A icon

This problem occurs due to a bug in RiftVault and can occur for multiple reasons. To resolve the issue, upgrade to the latest version of RiftVault by clicking Check for Updates in the application menu.

Q icon

When I move data to a Safe Deposit Box, why is it still on my computer in the original location?

A icon

Since anything can accidentally be dragged into AllSecure (which will automatically be stored in a Safe Deposit Box), AllSecure will not automatically delete the original data. Once you have created a Safe Deposit Box, please drag the original data into "Trash", and then open "Trash". Click "Finder", then "Secure Empty Trash" in the application menu. Selecting "OK" in the pop-up box will securely erase the original data from your hard drive.

Q icon

How do I change my password for AllSecure?

A icon

Click "AllSecure" and then "Preferences" in the application menu. Then, click the "Change Password" button at the top of the sheet window.

Q icon

How do I check to see if I have the most recent version of AllSecure?

A icon

Click "Check for Updates" in the application menu. Follow the on-screen instructions to update the software.

Q icon

How do I print my records for safekeeping?

A icon

Click "File" and then "Print" in the application menu. If you would like to print certain items only, be sure to preselect them in AllSecure before you begin printing (only the selected items will be printed). If you do not select any items, all items in AllSecure will be printed.

Q icon

I can't find an item for something I would like to store. What should I do?

A icon

This is exactly why we created the Safe Deposit Box! Just like a real safe deposit box, you can place anything and everything in an AllSecure Safe Deposit Box. For more information, please click here.

Q icon

What happened to RiftVault?

A icon

RiftVault is now AllSecure! For more information on why we decided to make this change, please see our blog. However, if you would still like to download the latest version of RiftVault, please click here.

A icon

Tap "Settings", then "FastCall", and then "Search Type". Change "Search Type" to "Advanced Search".

Q icon

I have lots of contacts. Why does FastCall seem slow?

A icon

We have worked very hard to optimize FastCall as much as possible. However, because of the way that Apple safeguards the contact database, FastCall must first "download" all of the contacts (which does take time for very large databases). You can still begin a search while the contacts are being downloaded (even if they haven't been displayed in the list view).

Q icon

Why do I receive a pop-up alert when I tap to dial a phone number and how can I prevent it from appearing?

A icon

Unfortunately, with the release of iPhone OS 3.0, Apple changed the behavior of the dialing interface that is accessible to third party applications. Now, whenever a phone number is dialed from within FastCall and competing third party applications, the iPhone OS displays an alert that looks like the following:

FastCall Screenshot

There is currently no way to disable this pop-up alert that appears. Apple claims the confirmation pop-up is a safety feature intended to prevent malicious applications from utilizing phone features.

If you would like to send feedback to Apple regarding this pop-up alert, you may do so using this page: http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html
